New Bedford man jailed for life for fatal stabbing

Posted: Updated:

NEW BEDFORD (AP) - A New Bedford man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally stabbing another man outside a soup kitchen.

The Bristol District Attorney's Office says 24-year-old Jonathan Keith Niemic was convicted and sentenced on Friday. He has been held without bail since his arrest in October 2010 on a murder charge in connection with the death of 34-year-old Michael Correia of Fairhaven.

State police troopers and New Bedford police detectives arrested Niemic about eight hours after the stabbing outside an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting near a soup kitchen on Purchase Street. Niemic was found hiding in an apartment complex.
