Cape Cod bear extends its 15 minutes of fame

ORLEANS -

The so-called Cape Cod bear has recently become a highly sought after animal, so much so that an Orleans resident set up a camera outside just to catch a glimpse of him.

"When I knew the bear was in South Orleans I said to my wife, 'I think I'll put out the trail camera.' I hadn't done that this year," Terry Thalman tells FOX 25.

Thalman says he usually puts out the camera so that his grandchildren who live in Germany can see the animals that live in his neighborhood.

After tracking the bear's activity for a few days, Thalman decided to put the camera outside. The next morning, he came out to find his nectarine tree had been damaged by a large animal.

"When I collected the camera, brought it back, and entered it on my computer there was the bear," says Thalman.

Thalman says that it has been fun tracking the bear, but he hopes that environmental officials take good care of him.

"If they tranquilize him, maybe he can find good friends in the Berkshires," says Thalman.

The bear has been spotted in several towns throughout the Cape. Wildlife experts believe the bear swam across the Cape Cod Canal.
