JAKARTA (NEWSCORE) - The Indonesian capital, Jakarta, was shaken Monday by a strong earthquake with a preliminary reading of 6.1, the state meteorological agency reported.
The quake struck at 11:18 GMT, 75 miles (121km) southwest of the main island of Java, at a depth of 15 miles (24km) below the sea, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.
The US Geological Survey recorded the temblor at 5.9 magnitude, adding that its epicenter was 109 miles (175km) from Jakarta.
Twitter users in the capital described shaking and swaying buildings.
