PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The weather in Providence isn't cooperating for those hoping to see the transit of Venus across the sun, an event that won't take place again until the year 2117.
Brown University had planned for Ladd Observatory staff, members of the Skyscrapers Amateur Astronomical Society and the public to watch the planet move across the sun from the roof of the school's athletic center.
But cloud cover is forcing the university to hold only an indoor viewing during which people can watch a live feed of Venus being broadcast by NASA. The program begins at 5:45 p.m.
The university says two streets in Providence were named for the same rare celestial event that took place in 1769. They are Transit and Planet streets.
