BERKLEY, Mich. (WJBK) -
There has been a major overhaul for an historic repair shop on Woodward Avenue. Vinsetta Garage in Berkley is now a cool, new restaurant. Fox 2's Alan Longstreet says people love it.
"The building is just so special and we've got cars in our blood, and you think of this place on Woodward Avenue and there's just no more important shop on Woodward than Vinsetta Garage," said co-owner Curt Catallo. "We weren't going to restore this place. We weren't going to rehab it. We were going to preserve it. We're going to take everything that made this place so extraordinary and try to capture it."
"We wanted to have things for everyone to choose from, so we have our own house vegan meat that we make from scratch," said executive chef Aaron Cozadd.
"What makes our menu here different is that we have a custom shop side. That side is totally customizable. We have meatballs with pasta that you can do -- four different kinds of meatballs, four different kinds of sauces, different pastas, extras you can add. We have our burgers. We have all sorts of different patties. We have a house blend of beef that has brisket, short rib and chuck in it. To that you can add anything. It comes with the house-made salt and vinegar chips, and then we have our pizzas that are fired in our coal oven, wide range of toppings, cheese, sauces for that, as well."
"It's great," said customer Heather Rutledge, who was enjoying the mac and cheese. "I've had it at The Union and The Woodshop, so we're regulars and we wanted to check it out."
"The food is really good. It's a really neat atmosphere. I love the old dragster up here and the old memorabilia. I got my car fixed here at Vinsetta Garage the last year they were open, so I've been waiting for the restaurant opening to happen," said customer Mike Bilotia.
"At the end of the day, it's about the food and we're going to do food that speaks to the space and speaks to Woodward Avenue and carries on a tradition of Vinsetta Garage, and we're honored to do that," Catallo said.
