Since last November, the Inkster police department has gone from more than 60 sworn police officers down to about 45. Now, 21 more will be laid off. The officers are needed, but like so many communities, Inkster is short on cash and options. Inkster City Council voted to lay off the officers on July 1st.

Inkster does have about 50 reserve officers who volunteer to work the streets. But, sources say they don't have the same powers as sworn police officers and they're fairly limited on what they can do. Some suspect the layoffs mean the city is one step closer to eliminating the department completely. Stay with Fox 2 and myfoxdetroit.com for updates.
