WORCESTER (AP) - A Newton man has pleaded guilty to paying
kickbacks to employees of a central Massachusetts transit authority to
get them to by-pass the bidding system and steer business paid by the
state's Medicaid program to a company he owned.
Alexander Shrayber pleaded guilty on Tuesday to paying the bribes to two Montachusett Regional Transit Authority employees.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 16. Punishment is expected to include restitution.
Prosecutors
say the 57-year-old Shrayber paid authority employees monthly cash
bribes to land contracts for his companies transporting Medicaid
patients to medical appointments. Authorities allege the scheme from
2007 until April 2010 helped Shrayber win contracts over competitors who
made lower bids. Prosecutors say Shrayber's companies took in about
$4.4 million in the scheme.
