Boston citizen tackles bank robbery suspect

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Prosecutors are praising a Boston man for foiling a bank robbery by tackling the suspect despite an age and weight disadvantage.

Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley says 32-year-old Robert Krol Jr. entered a Charlestown bank Tuesday wearing a wig, sunglasses, and cap and handed a teller a note demanding cash.

He fled with a small amount of money.

Jim Andrea, who was standing in line at the bank, followed the suspect outside and tackled him in the parking lot, then held on until police arrived. Prosecutors say the 59-year-old Andrea is three inches shorter and 50 pounds lighter than Krol.

Conley tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/L7DCds ) that Andrea displayed "the real spirit of Charlestown."

Krol pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday. He was held on $50,000 cash bail.
