FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A yellow ribbon is tied to the tree in front of Sergeant Matthew Leach's home.  His wife says she just wants her son to know his father was a hero.

"He was very loved and knows it and we miss him," said Sarah Leach.

Putting on a brave face, she mourns the loss of her husband, 29-year-old Staff Sergeant Matthew Leach of Ferndale.  He died Tuesday in Afghanistan.  His cause of death is still under investigation.  He was found unresponsive on the ground.

He left two months ago for his third tour of duty.  His son, Jack, was just five months old.

"I want Jack to know that his father was a hero and he was a great man."

The news comes the day before baby Jack turned seven months old.  In September, Sarah and Matthew would have celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary.

A class of 2000 Ferndale graduate, the couple has strong ties to Southeast Michigan and Sarah's leaning on her family now more than ever.  She told us she is just glad her husband died a hero doing what he love.

"He's the best husband, the happiest father and a great person.  It's nice to hear everyone saying how much they miss him and love him and how much they meant to him, so it's comforting to me that he has so many people that love him."

Sarah Leach says that she plans to start a scholarship fund for her son in her husband's name.
