SAUGUS (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A tragic accident Sunday in Saugus took the life of a 2-year-old girl from Peabody.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Essex Street outside of the Family United Methodist Church, where the girl and her family were attending Mass.

According to police, the child's mother attempted to reach through the passenger side of the vehicle to turn it on and start the air conditioning while holding the child; however, the car suddenly lurched forward and the child fell from her mother's arms onto the pavement.

The infant died as a result of injuries sustained from hitting the pavement.

People in the area at the time say the scene outside the church was frantic.

The little girl was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later. The mother was so distraught she had to be taken away in an ambulance.

Police are not releasing the names of anyone involved.

On Monday, Saugus assistant Police Chief Lt. Leonard Campanello and the Essex District Attorney's office called it a tragic accident.  No criminal charges will be filed.

A special bank account was created to help the little girl's family with her funderal arrangements.  Donations can be made to Bank of America - Everett, Izabella FUNERAL FUND.  The routing number is 0046.3666.4269.
