SPRINGFIELD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A 23-year-old Springfield man was arrested early Tuesday morning after reportedly robbing another man and engaging in a fight with police.

Guillermo Almodovar is facing numerous charges, including assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and unarmed robbery, after he robbed a male victim of his wallet and then led police on a foot chase.

Officers on routine patrol in the downtown Springfield area noticed two men involved in a struggle around 1:41 a.m. at 1380 Main Street.  The officers pulled over and the suspect fled the scene.

The victim told police that Almodovar had stolen his wallet and had attempted to steal his sandals.

The officers followed Almodovar down a dead end alleyway towards Pynchon Street.  Almodovar put his hands up as if to surrender, but then decided to fight the officers.

Police had to mace the suspect in order to subdue him and were able to recover the victim's wallet.

Officers searched the suspect and found six bags of marijuana plant fragments and seeds.

Almodovar was also wanted by the West Springfield Police Department on default warrants.  He was taken into custody and will be arraigned in Springfield District Court.
