Southampton Police say New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd was arrested on a DWI charge after he crashed his SUV into a telephone pole in the Hamptons Sunday morning.
The 39-year-old Kidd was arrested on a drunken-driving charge, days after signing with the Knicks.
Kidd was treated at Southampton Hospital for minor injuries. He was arraigned on a misdemeanor driving-while-intoxicated charge and released without bail, according to the Southampton police.
TMZ.com has a photo of Kidd being carried out of a club called SL East. TMZ said witnesses at the club say he was "incredibly drunk."
The Knicks, who signed the 10-time All-Star in free agency this week, had no comment.
Police say Kidd was driving alone in his 2010 Cadillac Escalade when it hit a pole and veered into the woods around 2:00 a.m. in Water Mill.
Kidd's attorney Ed Burke, Jr. released the following statement:
"Jason was involved in a single vehicle accident on his way back home from a charity function last night. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. Jason has pleaded not guilty to a DWI charge and awaits further court proceedings."
Kidd's next court date wasn't available and a DWI charge carries the potential for up to a year in prison.
This is not the first time Kidd has been in trouble with the law before. As a member of the Phoenix Suns in 2001, he was arrested on a domestic violence charge, acknowledging that he struck Joumana Kidd, his former wife.
The Knicks signed Kidd earlier this week that will pay him about $3 million a year. Kidd played in for New Jersey Nets from 2001-2007, leading the Nets to two NBA Finals appearances, before being traded to Dallas.
