Detroit union leaders search for options

Posted: Updated:

Detroit's union workers are outraged over deep cuts to jobs, pay and benefits. But they say the city has other options.

The mayor is calling for deep cuts in the face of financial crisis. He says these cuts are essential to Detroit's fiscal future.

Union leaders are going through the budget line by line and they say some parts of it just don't add up - like an extra $12 million allocated for insurance claims and $28 million earmarked for restructuring and consolidation.

They mayor's spokesperson says the $28 million is money the city had to set aside to pay for a laundry list of measures required by the consent agreement, including changes to public lighting, DDOT, collection of income tax and unspecified public safety initiatives. And that money for insurance claims isn't even there yet because the bond has not been sold.

Bottom line - union leaders say what's happening inside city hall makes no sense and they intend to prove that.
