DPD unions fight back against cuts

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

We're learning new details about what Detroit's latest round of police cuts will entail.

The fall out from Mayor Bings sweeping union pay cuts is undeniable. 10% cut in pay, cuts to sick days, funeral days and bonus vacation days for officers who rarely call in sick. Joe Duncan, President of DPOA says theirs only one thing to call it - union busting.

The DPOA has filed an emergency appeal to get Mayor Bing's decision over turned and they plan to take it all the way to the Supreme Court, but for now encouragement is coming from other places.

Fox 2 obtained a copy of a morale memo from Chief Godbee to the rest of his staff. In it, he apologizes for pending reductions, but says his ultimate goal was preventing pink slips.

We talked to police officers who are angry and insulted. One officer tells us that if an officer with a family of four was hired into the department as a new hire, he would be eligible for food assistance.

Many officers also rely on court time and overtime to supplement their income, and now that has been significantly reduced.
