NEW BEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Police in New Bedford are continuing the search for an assault rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition that was stolen from the trunk of an unmarked police vehicle last week.
New Bedford Police Chief David Provencher tells the New Bedford Standard Times that the police department is leaving no stone unturned in searching for what he identifies as a Stag Arms, Stag-15, Model 2T, .223 caliber patrol rifle.
Provencher tells the newspaper that he learned the rifle was stolen on Wednesday. On Saturday, he voiced plans to contact other state officials for assistance on finding the rifle, including U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz.
The assault rifle was stolen from the trunk of a detective's vehicle. Sources tell the Standard Times that the rifle is left in a case that is bolted to the trunk and secured with a lock. Whoever took the gun reportedly did not take the case with them.
