Three people in a Chevy Cavalier were heading southbound on Canton Center Road at around 2:10 Tuesday morning when a Monte Carlo traveling eastbound on Michigan Avenue slammed into them.
18-year-old Brooke Kennedy and 19-year-old Danielle Beavers, passengers inside the Cavalier, were killed.
It was a blinking red light for the Cavalier, which amounts to a stop signal. The Monte Carlo faced with a blinking yellow ended up slamming into the Cavalier. The driver of the car that hit the victims spoke with Fox 2's Al Allen.
"I looked in the car. It was bad," said Javarius Snowden. "Some fellow... he came out here. He checked their pulse or whatever. One of the girls coughed. After that I just blacked out."
Family members of the girls that were killed were at the scene Tuesday morning were wondering how two young lives could be gone so soon.
Police are still investigating how this may have happened. Alcohol has not been ruled out, but it does not appear to be a factor.
"At this point, we don't have anything to support alcohol or drugs were a factor or speed for that matter," said Canton Township Police Sergeant Pat Sullivan. "At this point, it looks like probably one of the cars ran the light."
The two young ladies had a lot of friends at the Ruby Tuesday where they worked. We talked with one of the managers inside. With tears in his eyes, he said he has the difficult job of telling each and every person who comes in who worked with the women that now they're gone.
The Cavalier's 24-year-old male driver from Whitaker and the Monte Carlo's 21-year-old male driver from Westland both were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
"It does not look like ... the other [driver had] any time to brake, so it was probably a full impact," Sullivan said.
Now friends and family are remembering two young ladies, best friends, that had the rest of their lives ahead of them. A reminder of how quickly those we love can be taken away.
We understand family members may have a hard time with the funeral expenses. We are in touch with family friends. We'll let you know if there is anything you can do to help them out.
