BELMONT (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – If you're 18 and looking to buy cigarettes or other tobacco products in the town of Belmont, you're going to have to go somewhere else.
Beginning August 1, Belmont is raising the minimum age allowed to buy tobacco from 18 to 19 years old. This goes into effect on August 1. Most Massachusetts cities and towns are allowed to do this.
Belmont officials say this is about stopping tobacco access to minors, particularly in high school.
Needham was the first to do this, raising the age allowed to buy tobacco to 21 last year.
