After an extensive search and social media firestorm, Boston Police tweeted that they had located the costume just before 4 p.m. Friday.

In a release, the Boston Red Sox said an employee had picked up the costume and decided to "spread some cheer around Boston." Team officials were not aware of the employee's plan. It wasn't immediately known if the employee would be punished.

There was no word where Wally had been found.

The search for Wally prompted a social media explosion Friday. The hashtag #whereswally was trending on Twitter for part of the afternoon. Some users also created missing posters in hopes of helping aid the search.

Other users posted as much information about the beloved mascot as they could remember. They described him as green, fuzzy and wearing a Red Sox hat. His official bio on the Red Sox website listed his height as "pretty big" and his weight as "doesn't like to say."

Some users speculated that Wally had simply left the struggling Red Sox in hopes of finding a new team before the trade deadline. Others believed Wally had been traded for some pitching and a "guy who can hit lefties."

The MBTA also got in on the action encouraging any T riders who may have seen the mascot to say something using their new "See Something, Say Something App."
