New club for teens opening in Clinton Township

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Technicians were testing the light show on opening day for Club Oxygn in Clinton Township. Owner Michael Cooley said the club is only for 13 to 17-year-olds Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays.

What kind of music will they be playing?

"Everything that's on the radio now. Top 40 mixes, special guest deejays. I've got special guest appearances coming with somebody from New York to keep it fresh every weekend. Saturdays are teen talent where two can compete, one wins, and starting in August, I'm doing teens battle of the bands," said Cooley.

Although Oxygn is located in the old Chaplin's Comedy Club, Cooley said there was nothing funny about overcoming concerns and red tape, but he saw an opportunity giving teens an outlet they don't currently have.

"There's no competition in the teen night club. You [don't have] to worry about the next guy down the street trying to do it," Cooley explained. "This was a two year, four month project and well over $16,000 in politics, land uses, etcetera to get where it's at right now."

Mariesa Nicosia is managing the energy bar fully stocked with non-alcoholic drinks.

"We have Monster, Red Bull, your vitamin waters, stuff like that. We have a few speciality drinks. They're Italian sodas."

So, hundreds of dancing, yelling, screaming, laughing teens hopped up on sugar, which brings us to safety and security.

"I've got a twelve man security on the inside with everybody with ten years experience or more, some retired police officers from Detroit," Cooley said. "I've got a three security staff system outside ... the cars are lettered, the lights are on, they're fully uniformed, so when they enter the parking lot, the parents know it's secure."

You really can't miss the sign, no alcohol, no drugs, no weapons, no baggy clothes, dress to impress, basically the owners say don't show up smelling like pot or booze and you will have a good time.

Admission is $15 at the door, there is room for almost 600 and closing time is midnight. Students must have I.D. to be admitted.
