Mass. lawmakers scramble to finish session's work

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts lawmakers are rushing to finish their legislative work for the year before their formal session ends Tuesday at midnight.

With the deadline in mind, both the state's House of Representatives and Senate worked Tuesday to debate and vote on high-profile bills.

A top priority, both chambers moved quickly to approve a compromise version of a health care cost containment bill in both the House and Senate. It now heads to Gov. Deval Patrick, who has said he will sign the legislation.

Lawmakers have also sent a storm response bill, which would create new emergency response requirements for public utilities companies, to Patrick for consideration. They have yet to give final approval to an economic development bill.

Meanwhile, House lawmakers began debate on automobile repair compromise legislation Tuesday evening.
