SPRINGFIELD (AP) - A Springfield man has pleaded not guilty in connection with a hit-and-run accident that killed a woman pushing a baby stroller across the street.
Thirty-five-year-old Michael Wingfield was arraigned Tuesday on charges including motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The Republican newspaper reports the judge set Wingfield's bail at $250,000 cash, and also revoked his bail from a 2009 marijuana possession case.
Nineteen-year-old Ashley Ballester was struck by a car and killed Friday night, and her 2-year-old daughter was thrown from the stroller and seriously injured. Wingfield turned himself in Monday.
Gloria Ballester tells the newspaper her granddaughter is showing improvement
at a hospital. She said her daughter had planned to study nursing this fall at
American International College.
