High school baseball team at center of underage drinking probe

Posted: Updated:

PLYMOUTH (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Plymouth Police and the Plymouth school district are investigating allegations that the Plymouth North High School baseball coach attended a party where underage drinking was present.

Investigators were made aware of the allegations after complaints were made to the school. The school then notified police.

Police Chief Michael E. Botieri confirms to FOX 25 that an investigation is underway about allegations that a parent threw a party for the team following the Division II State Baseball Championships.

Botieri says people have made claims that alcohol was present at the party and that the parents and coach Dwayne Follette, who was allegedly in attendance, were aware of its presence. However, Botieri says investigators are having a difficult time getting witnesses to come forward and make these allegations on the record.

Pam Myette, the parent whose party is now the center of a police and school investigation, says she has nothing to hide.

Myette says that she hosted a cookout for the parents, players, and coaches of the Plymouth North Varsity Baseball team in late June.

"The principal took this anonymous letter and basically took it and ran with it," says Myette.

According to the police report obtained by FOX 25, an unidentified parent claims Follette gave players shots of alcohol and even "engaged in a drinking game" with them.

Cathy Lacy, who was at the party with her son, says that never happened.

The report claims that after the party, Coach Follette admitted he smelled alcohol on his son's breath, but he told investigators he never supplied any alcohol.

Myette and Lacy say if the players did drink, they did it secretly and without permission.

The school superintendent tells FOX 25 that Follette's coaching position is contracted on a season-to-season basis. The school district will decide following an investigation whether or not to bring Follette back for another year.

No charges have been filed during the probe. The investigation is expected to be done by next week.

STATEMENT FROM PLYMOUTH PUBLIC SCHOOLS:

As the result of unsolicited reports forwarded to the administration of the Plymouth North High School alleging that Plymouth North High School baseball players and a baseball coach engaged in consumption of alcoholic beverages during a "breakup barbeque" or cookout, the school system began an investigation.

At this time, the school district is in the process of an internal investigation by conducting a series of interviews, after which the school district will determine the appropriate course of action.

Because this investigation is ongoing and the results of the investigation may conclude with reference to certain individuals at different points in time, we will have no further comment concerning this matter at this time.
