BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) The Boston Water and Sewer Commission announced on Wednesday that one of their contractors recently lost a hard drive that may contain customer information.
Officials with the commission say the contractor, Alcara Technologies LLC, was using the information to update their remote meter reading system.
The missing drive may contain information about customers like names, addresses, phone numbers, account and meter numbers. Commission officials say the information is "otherwise publicly available" and did not contain any social security numbers, financial data, or state license and identification numbers.
The commission is investigating the missing hard drive and asks any customer who receives a call seeking confidential information from someone claiming to represent the commission to call their customer service line at (617) 989-7800 or their main number at (617) 989-7000.
Customers will be notified of the incident in a letter. A public notice is also viewable at www.bwsc.org.
