BOSTON (AP) - Tuukka Rask says he was surprised when he heard that fellow Bruins goalie Tim Thomas had decided not to play next season.
But he's not shocked.
Boston's new starting goalie said Thursday he wasn't expecting Thomas to skip his last season under contract with the Bruins. But he said he appreciates Thomas' decision to want to be with the family and take some time away from the game.
Asked if he had any indications that Thomas might be leaving, Rask said that everybody knew he was a little tired but he didn't seem like he was exhausted mentally.
Thomas played every minute of the Bruins' 2011 playoff run to the Stanley Cup. Then he played all seven games of the team's first-round ouster from the 2012 playoffs to Washington.
