High bacteria counts in water force beach closures

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Several Massachusetts beaches have closed because of bacteria.

According to The Boston Globe, heavy rains and humid air may be to blame. The cause is uncertain, however.

Beaches from Quincy to Wellfleet remained closed Thursday because of high bacteria counts in the water. (Click here to see what beaches were closed.)

The state's health department requires weekly tests for the bacteria enterococci, the newspaper reports. Beaches are closed to swimming when bacteria in collected water samples exceed state standards.
