Cape Cod to help beachgoers ID sharks on the rise

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH WELLFLEET (AP) - With a rise in shark sightings off Cape Cod, officials are beefing up efforts to identify the danger.

The Cape Cod Times reports that beachgoers at the Cape Cod National Seashore's six ocean beaches will soon have a picture book to help improve ways to identify what they see in the water.

The new reference manuals will be available with shark witness questionnaires.

The questionnaire asks what the fin looked like, how far off-shore it was and its color.

A swimmer left a hospital Friday after being attacked by a shark.

Sightings off the Massachusetts coast have increased in the last few years, likely because of a growing number of seals that sharks eat.
