Lawyers to update judge in 'Whitey' case

Posted: Updated:

Lawyers for mobster James "Whitey" Bulger are expected to give a judge an update on evidence turned over to the defense by prosecutors.

A status conference is scheduled in federal court Monday, when a judge is also expected to set deadlines for motions to be filed leading up to Bulger's trial in March.

Bulger, the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, is accused of participating in 19 murders. He was also an FBI informant who provided information on his gang's main rival, the New England Mob.

Bulger's lawyers have said they plan to file a motion arguing that he should not be prosecuted because he was promised immunity by a representative of the federal government while he was an informant.

Bulger fled Boston in 1994. He was captured last year in Santa Monica, Calif.
