Methuen officer on leave following bar brawl

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Mass. (AP) - A Methuen police officer has been placed on leave after the chief found out about his alleged participation in a weekend brawl at a Salisbury bar.

Salisbury police say 38-year-old Shawn Tardif was arrested and charged with assault and battery and wanton destruction of property after the brawl just after 11 p.m. Saturday.

He is scheduled for arraignment Monday in Newburyport District Court.

Salisbury police say the fight started after Tardif either bumped or was bumped by another person.

The six-year Methuen police officer is accused of damaging DJ equipment.

Methuen Chief Joseph Solomon tells The Eagle-Tribune that Tardif is on paid administrative leave "until the matter is reviewed."

Bar management said they are still looking into the incident.
