Mass. spends $275k on voter registration letter to welfare recipients

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - The state of Massachusetts is spending more than $275,000 to send voter registration letters to nearly 500,000 people on welfare.

The mailings were in response to a lawsuit filed in May which claimed Massachusetts and other states failed to follow the federal law that requires people on welfare be offered the chance to register to vote when they sign up for public assistance.

One of the plaintiffs is a nonprofit group named "Demos" of which Elizabeth Warren's daughter, Amelia Warren Tyagi, is the chair of the board of trustees.

Massachusetts settled the suit in July just a few months before the election period and sent out voter registration letters to nearly 500,000 welfare recipients.

Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is faulting the state for sending out voter registration letters to nearly half a million welfare recipients.

Brown said it's "outrageous to use taxpayer dollars to register welfare recipients" calling it "a special effort to boost one political party over another" and aid his Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren.

"It's important to note that people who are on welfare should get out and vote, and I'm looking forward to working for their votes.  That being said, for Professor Warren's daughter to be head of an organization that's actually using taxpayer monies to get people on welfare out to vote…it just doesn't pass the smell test," Brown said in a statement.

Warren campaign manager Mindy Myers called Brown's claim "bizarre."

Myers said Warren is proud of her daughter and said all that Massachusetts is trying to do is comply with the law and "any suggestion to the contrary is just wrong."

"This is about compliance with the law. And the law should be enforced.  And I think...so no dirty tricks?  Look, no one likes to see attacks on their family but this is about a law that's been in place for 20 years.  This organization was working on enforcement of the law before Amelia even joined it," Warren said.

In a statement, Demos said they "completely reject" any assertion that this is politically motivated.
