BOSTON (AP) - The Massachusetts Republican Party is seeking any communication between Gov. Deval Patrick, state Secretary William Galvin and welfare officials about the decision to send voter registration letters to half a million welfare recipients.
The letters cost about $276,000 and helped fulfill an agreement the state made to settle a lawsuit alleging Massachusetts failed to comply with a 1993 federal law requiring residents have the chance to register when they access public assistance.
Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown called the agreement "a special effort to boost one political party."
Brown's Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren's campaign manager called Brown's claim "bizarre."
The GOP is also looking for any communication between Patrick, Warren adviser Doug Rubin and Warren's daughter Amelia Warren Tyagi, who sits on the board of a group that helped push the lawsuit.
