HYANNISPORT (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A large dead leatherback sea turtle washed ashore on the beach in front of the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport on Thursday.

The leatherback turtle, one of the largest species of sea turtles in the world, appeared to be 5 to 6 feet in length.  It appeared the turtle's shell had been split in two.

It is unclear at this time how the sea turtle died.

According to a member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, a representative of the Massachusetts Audubon Society responded to the scene to examine the turtle.
