Springfield Police arrest two for breaking into parking meters

SPRINGFIELD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Two men were arrested in Springfield after police claim they caught the pair smashing parking meters to take the money inside.

Springfield Police claim two officers found Richard Pioggia, 39, and Jamie Canterbury, 39, who both currently reside at the Worthington Street Shelter, pounding on a meter at 5:30 a.m. on Friday. The arresting officers recovered a hammer and $13.30 in change from the pair.

Pioggia and Canterbury face charges that include larceny under $250, defacement of real property, break into a depository, and possession of burglarious instruments. Pioggia had two outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.

The arrests come after numerous meter break ins in the past ten days.
