Romney names Ryan as running mate: public responds

Posted: Updated:

Romney's vice president choice has not only energized the republican base, but also, democrats who predict Paul Ryan's staunch conservatism will be a liability.

FOX Chicago News' Amara Walker spoke with voters on both sides of the political aisle.

Some of the people say they believe Paul Ryan's candidacy will ensure a stronger turnout among conservatives in November, but some independents are turned off by what they call Ryan's "extreme" views on fiscal policy. Democratic voters feel the same way.

"I think it'll help the democrats because Paul Ryan is extreme on the conservative side. That's why I think Romney picked him," said Guy Cerullo, a democrat from Michigan. "I think it will help the democrats. Personally, my vote is going to Obama, so Romney doesn't matter to me."

"I think it will help the democrats because Paul Ryan is a pretty extreme conservative. I think that's why Romney picked him," commented Republican Chris Frymier.

The word traveled fast on North Michigan Avenue with mixed reaction from both locals and tourists. Some commented on his age, noting that perhaps it will help Romney with the younger vote, while others thought it would help Obama's re-election run.

Obama's campaign criticized Ryan's deeply controversial budget blueprints he authored in 2010, advocating a re-make of Medicare to cut government spending.

However, Jennifer Ricci believes Ryan's conservative budget plan will put the economy on the right track. "I like his fiscal policies. I think he's real. I think he knows what he's talking about."

The decision now puts "deficit reduction" front and center of the debate. Voters say it gives them a clearer choice in November. It remains to be seen if Romney's campaign will now get the jolt it needs for November, especially in swing states such as Florida, Iowa, and Pennsylvania.

Recent polls show Obama holding an edge in the presidential election.
