WORCESTER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Commuters in Worcester are asked to seek alternate routes after a sewer main forced the closing of an I-290 on-ramp.
Officials say the city experienced a major sewer line failure near the I-290 on-ramp on Belmont Street. A 100-year-old sewer main collapsed, causing an opening between the ramp and the Worcester Housing Authority buildings.
A contractor for the Department of Public Works and Parks will be replacing a pipe. Work also needs to be done to stabilize the ground at the site of the large opening.
The I-290 on-ramp on Belmont Street will be closed to all traffic beginning on Monday. No word on how long the ramp will remain closed. Officials recommend that drivers access I-290 westbound from East Central Street, Summer Street, or Kelley Square.
