BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) The average monthly rent in Boston has jumped 7-percent in the past year.

According to the Boston Globe, the average rent for an apartment in Boston is over $1,800 a month.

The newspaper reports that Boston is now the fifth most expensive rental market in the country, behind San Francisco and New York.

In spite of high prices, vacancies in Beantown have seen a decline over the past year.

Mayor Menino is calling on developers to build smaller, more affordable apartments geared toward middle income tenants as a result of the report.
