Mass. honors service of deceased national guardsman

NEW BEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Flags were lowered to half-staff at state buildings across Massachusetts on Saturday morning in honor of an Army National Guard Sergeant from New Bedford who died last Sunday.

Governor Deval Patrick ordered that the American flag be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Saturday in honor of Sergeant First Class Stephen Policarpo.

According to an obituary on SouthCoastToday.com, Policarpo passed away on Aug. 12 at St. Luke's Hospital. Policarpo served in the National Guard for over 30 years.

A funeral mass was held on Saturday morning in New Bedford for Policarpo.
