The emergency landing marks the second time in less than 24 hours that a United Airlines flight that departed from Newark had to make an emergency landing.

United flight 409 departed Newark en route to Seattle when there were reports of possible smoke in the cockpit and cabin.  Officials said the flight crew noticed an unusual smell in the cockpit.
