BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — An athlete who died after suffering medical distress during the swimming portion of the USA Triathlon in Vermont has been identified as a Massachusetts man.
Burlington
police say 53-year-old Richard Angelo of Beverly, Mass., was pulled
from Lake Champlain and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced
dead.
More than 2,300 athletes participated in Saturday's event,
which was held in Burlington for the second consecutive year. Race
organizers said all participants had to qualify to compete in the
Olympic-Distance race, which includes a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer
bike ride and 10-kilometer run.
