WESTFIELD (AP) - Two people have drowned in Hampton Ponds while out boating.

State police say a 64-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman died Monday evening after their small dog jumped into the water. The man jumped into the pond to retrieve the dog but became distressed and the woman tried to save him. Both drowned shortly before 7 p.m.

Police did not identify the two people or disclose their relationship. They also did not say what happened to the dog.
