The Republican candidate for sheriff in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire apologized on Friday for comments he made about using deadly force on abortion doctors.
Earlier in the week, Frank Szabo said publicly that he will protect the life of an unborn child, even if it means killing the abortion doctor. Szabo says that he didn't mean that, but he stands behind his opinion of abortion. He says even though it is a legal procedure, it is unlawful.
Szabo discussed his comments with FOX 25 on Friday.
"If the question had been, ‘would you shoot up a doctor's office?' or ‘would you shoot a doctor?' I would've been appalled by that question," says Szabo.
Szabo adds that he feels life needs to be protected and that he'll do "everything within the authority of the sheriff's office to protect those lives."
When asked to clarify on that statement, Szabo explained with a hypothetical situation.
"In a situation, if I find out there's an abortion clinic, I need to arrest people for violating the law," Szabo explained.
Szabo also responded to a question about whether or not women may be offended by such an action.
"They may," he says. "I have lots of people who are very supportive, again people that agree with the decision of protecting life and I hope people will understand that abortion is a hot topic issue, but it is just one of those issues of what the sheriff is supposed to be doing to protect the people."
While Szabo agrees that there are many different opinions on when a fetus becomes a living human, but he stands behind the idea that life begins at the moment of conception. He believes abortion is unconstitutional and will fight it all the way.
