A haunting melody filled the air at Detroit's Cass Park during a party with a purpose. Back in 2009, R&B star Kem started his Mack & Third music festival and food drive for the homeless. Kem himself was homeless and struggled with drug and alcohol addictions in the 1990's.

"I don't regret my past, nor do I wish to shut the door on it," Kem told Fox 2. "The tools that I've learned, the principles that I've learned to overcome addiction and homelessness, are the same tools I use to run my business. Those are the principles that Mack & Third have been built on."

Hundreds of people came together Sunday to help those in need. They were treated to a free day of music with a lineup of local artists. There was also food, medical and dental screenings and a canned food drive.

Last year, organizers say the event brought in more than 100,000 canned goods and served meals to more than 2,000 homeless Metro Detroiters.

"Giving is the foundation to living an abundant life," Kem said. "We all have something to give."
