Posted: Updated:

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH (AP) - A North Attleborough man is headed to court to face accusations that he hurt a 1-month old infant he and his girlfriend were babysitting.

Authorities say 22-year-old Matthew Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Attleboro District Court on assault charges. Johnson turned himself in Monday and was held on $25,000 bail.

Police tell The Sun Chronicle (http://bit.ly/OGIM4M ) Johnson and his girlfriend were babysitting the child when fire officials were called to their apartment Aug. 17 for a medical emergency.

Authorities say the baby girl suffered a brain injury consistent with shaken baby syndrome, at least six broken ribs and bruises on her hands, legs and feet.

Johnson told police he tripped over a toy on the floor of their apartment and accidentally dropped the child.
