Panel: Mayor's casino selection process within law

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission says a plan by the Springfield mayor to select among several competing casino proposals in that city appears to fit within the framework of the state's new casino gambling law.

Stephen Crosby noted prior to Tuesday's regularly-scheduled meeting of the panel that the law gives municipal officials - and mayors in particular - broad powers to decide whether to negotiate with potential casino developers.

At least four companies are interested in Springfield. Mayor Domenic Sarno said Monday the city would begin a process next month that would result in negotiations with one or more of the developers.

Crosby called the Springfield situation "unusual," but added that the gaming commission would still have the final say over the granting of a casino license in western Massachusetts.
