FITCHBURG (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A 21-year-old Fitchburg man was arraigned on assault and battery charges on Monday after he allegedly confessed to throwing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son onto the floor.

A judge ordered Steven Stuart held on $50,000 bail after he reportedly assaulted the child causing him "significant and life threatening injuries," reports The Sentinel and Enterprise.

Police were called to Leyte Road around 7 p.m. on Sunday for a report of an unconscious and unresponsive toddler. The child was breathing, but had serious injuries and was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.  He is expected to survive.

According to the website, police questioned the child's 23-year-old mother, as well as Stuart, but neither immediately said what happened to the boy. It is unclear when Stuart confessed to injuring the child.

The investigation is ongoing

Stuart is scheduled to appear in court on September 27, 2012.
