DETROIT - Dozens of people with guns lined up early to take advantage of a gun buyback event as part of the city police department's ongoing efforts to remove dangerous weapons from the streets.
"I need gas money," said Ray Perry, who turned in a weapon.
The event Thursday was held St. Cecilia Catholic Church.
Police Chief Ralph Godbee showed up to thank the participants. Up to $50 was paid for an operational weapon, up to $100 for two or more operational weapons and up to $100 for assault weapons.
The event continues through 3 p.m. Police say no questions would be asked to those turning in weapons.
