BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Boston building inspectors are calling the condition of some apartments rented to students in the Allston area "deplorable."
During a walk-through in the Boston neighborhood, inspectors found students living in one 21-unit building on Ashford Street that they are calling uninhabitable, reports the Boston Herald. Problems in the building include evidence of bedbugs, roaches, and rats, broken smoke alarms, and asbestos.
FOX 25 spoke with Mayor Tom Menino on Saturday about the unsafe conditions. The mayor is proposing a new plan that will require landlords to register their apartments. Under the plan, each apartment will be inspected every three years.
Under the current system, apartments are only inspected when a complaint is filed.
