Record high Labor Day gas prices due to Isaac

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Gas prices broke a Labor Day record in 2012.

The nation-wide average is $3.80 for a gallon of unleaded regular. That's $0.13 higher than 2011, and the highest gas prices have ever been on Labor Day.

In Chicago, the average is $4.30 a gallon. That's $0.15 higher than last week.

Much of the blame is being put on Hurricane Isaac, which forced the closure of oil refineries in the gulf.

Even though Isaac has weakened and moved up north, residents of the Gulf Coast still felt the effects of the storm Labor Day.

Rescuers were still plucking stranded survivors off of rooftops in Louisiana Monday, and police have found the bodies of a man and woman inside a flooded home.

That brings the death toll from Isaac to at least seven: five in Louisiana and two in Mississippi.
