Alleged Melrose hit-and-run driver in court

Posted: Updated:

An elderly man accused of repeatedly running over a motorcyclist appeared in court Tuesday.

Eugene Ledonne, 76, is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police say on Sunday morning, Ledonne hit the motorcyclist from behind in Melrose at the intersection of Main, Franklin and Green streets. Ledonne then allegedly drove over the rider repeatedly before taking off.

Lynn Voncanel is one of Ledonne's neighbors. She tells FOX 25 the 76-year-old is a nice guy and she is shocked by details in the police report.

"He's probably not all there...he's getting old and he's been sick in the past he probably shouldn't even be driving," says Voncanel.

Voncanel was shocked to hear that Ledonne reportedly got out of his vehicle, looked at the victim and said, "I'm sorry," before getting back into his car and taking off.

Officers say witnesses recorded part of the incident on their cell phones.

Ledonne's family had no comment outside of court on Tuesday. Ledonne claims he blacked out and doesn't remember the incident.

The motorcyclist is reportedly recovering from serious injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital.
