It's the best indication yet that Apple is ready to drop its new iPhone soon.

The company has invited reporters to a news conference next week in San Francisco. The email invite shows a big "12" for September 12 — casting a shadow in the shape of a "5."

Of course, the "5'' would be the iPhone 5. Unconfirmed reports say Apple plans to show off its new smartphone — with sales to start a week or two later.

The next iPhone is expected to have a taller screen than the current model — and the ability to access the latest wireless data networks in the U.S.
