Mass. man accused of killing ex may claim insanity

Posted: Updated:

WOBURN (AP) — A Wayland man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend is considering an insanity defense at trial.

Nathaniel Fujita's lawyer on Thursday filed a motion in Middlesex Superior Court indicating that he may seek to use a lack of criminal responsibility defense.

Attorney William Sullivan tells The MetroWest Daily News ( ) that the motion does not mean that defense will definitely be used. He did not say why he filed this motion, or if Fujita has been diagnosed with any type of mental disorder.

The 19-year-old Fujita is accused of strangling and stabbing Lauren Astley in July 2011 and throwing her body in a marsh.

They were both 18 at the time and had just graduated from Wayland High School.

Fujita is being held without bail after pleading not guilty.
